PROJECT OVERVIEW

This project was a remediation project of a former Manufactured Gas Plant in the city of Newark, NJ. Work consisted of utility relocation, sheet pile installation, dewatering, excavation of contaminated soils, backfill with clean material and site restoration. Sheet piles were installed for both support of excavation and ground water cutoff walls. The original scope of the project include Soil Mixing for deep impact stabilization but was changed to additional deeper sheet pile cofferdams to serve as containment.

WHAT MADE THIS JOB COMPLEX

This project required the excavation to proceed to the confining clay layer without damaging it. The excavation proceeded to a depth of roughly 20 ft. below an active roadway, which did not allow for the installation of tiebacks due to extensive utilities within the right of way. Many existing utilities within the remedial site required replacement and upgrades to meet current state and local regulations.

HOW POSILLICO SOLVED IT

Posillico utilized GPS guided excavators to excavate to, and not penetrate the clay layer while taking survey measurements for the bottom of excavation as-built drawings. The SOE method installed along the active road way was a hybrid of phased excavations and rakers which avoided the need for tiebacks while limiting deflection of the SOE. Posillico worked closely with the City of Newark DPW and Mayor’s office to create a utility plan that would conform to current water quality objectives and regulations while minimizing costs for the final restoration work.
