PROJECT OVERVIEW

The project is a $31 million cost cap remediation involving a 10+ acre parcel located in the Queens West redevelopment area in the vicinity of 5th Street. The project requires the removal of approximately 120,000 tons of both non-hazardous and hazardous waste with an excavation depth down to 22 ft. below grade, a dewatering and water treatment system was setup along with a SOE system comprised of steel sheeting. All work was performed under a 130′ x 200′ negative pressure enclosure, which was comprised of multiple air handler exchange systems to reduce odors and protect workers inside the enclosures. The tents were relocated with a rolling system designed in house by Posillico.

WHAT MADE THIS JOB COMPLEX

Having to perform all excavation activities inside of negative pressure enclosures and relocating each of the enclosures up to eight times all during tight time constraints from the client. Groundwater had to be pumped out during excavation and soil had to be trucked out of the site, while still keeping in mind that trucking of this soil was adjacent to a neighborhood.

HOW POSILLICO SOLVED IT

Posillico developed a base system for each enclosure to allow relocation without the use of a crane. A groundwater treatment system was set up onsite before discharging the water. Soil was spray foamed with an odor suppression foam to reduce the nuisance odors from the workers and neighbors as trucks were leaving the site, a Community Air Monitoring Program CAMP system was also setup.
