PROJECT OVERVIEW

Removal of MGP contaminated soil on a large property that was to be the site of a high-rise building on the west side of midtown Manhattan.

WHAT MADE THIS JOB COMPLEX

There were issues of traffic that were caused by occupying half a city block near 42nd St. and 11th Ave. We also dealt with the removal of four 250,000-gallon masonry gasholders buried underground without disturbing the adjacent street, sidewalk and underground utilities. During this project we removed in excess of 80,000 tons of MPG contaminated soil. An average of 1,000 tons of soil was hauled through the Lincoln Tunnel daily. A dewatering system handling over 1,000,000 gallons of contaminated water was used to ensure the excavation was completed in a dry environment.

HOW POSILLICO SOLVED IT

Steel sheeting was used around the perimeter of the property to support the street and sidewalk. A down the hole hammer was also used to remove any obstructions prior to the installation of the support system. Our engineers then used a dewatering system to filter the polluted water out of the soil. During the project our engineers devised a way to eliminate one level of tie-backs, which saved the owner time and money.
